Though she came offering popcorn and Coke,
For a movie that I had spent my life,
Filming from some lonely place off-stage,
Watching Judy Garland poured champagne,
Holding her cup from the Cowardly Lion,
At the buffet, laughing at all his jokes,
And did not realize it was my best life;
Though her hair was made of ravens’ feathers,
And her eyes seemed innocent of pain,
When I made her laugh, which well I could,
I knew inside myself that it would end,
As all things end: by my own hands!
And I could not repeat that lonely life,
Watching the four companions that dance
And sing away down the golden road,
Arm in arm high upon the silver screen.
